To make the most of your spring workout, step outside. Running, biking and hiking are excellent spring workouts and have the advantage of not requiring any equipment. You can also head to a local park and jump rope, which burns about 200 calories in just 20 minutes. Spring is also the time of the year when sport leagues start to kick in, so you might want to consider joining a local soccer, tennis or even Ultimate Frisbee team to get fit and have fun at the same time.
Keep in mind that if you spent the winter exercising indoors, you might be due for a new pair of sneakers, according to Shape.com. This is especially true if you used the treadmill a lot or if you wear your sneakers outside of the gym as well, increasing the wear and tear.

All three of our clinics (Muscatine, West Liberty, & Columbus Junction) participated in the Healthiest State Initiative “Start Somewhere Walk” on October 7th! All of our Teams had great participation from both our Staff and friends, family, and clients from each location as well! In total, more than 291,000 Iowans joined in together to Walk breaking the former world record.

<l>

“In more than 2,300 group walks and thousands of individual walks, Iowans said ‘yes’ to starting our journey to becoming the healthiest state in the nation,” said Governor Terry Branstad, who announced the Healthiest State Initiative in August. “It was a remarkable display of energy as Iowans came together to ‘start somewhere’ in reaching this ambitious goal.”

<l>

Walk organizers had set a goal of 250,000 Start Somewhere Walk participants to best a walk world record currently claimed by Canada, which had 231,635 walk participants in 2007. Iowans beat that total even though the state has less than one-tenth of the population of Canada.

Andy Sierra, Senior for L&M High School rushed for 296 yards on 26 carries while scoring 5 touchdowns to help the Falcons upend Durant 48-21 to secure a spot for L&M in the state 2A football playoffs for the first time in 27 years and only 2nd time in their history! Congratulations on the season, the success, and your accomplishments Andy! MPTS has been very active with L&M’s student athletes this past year with our Sports Performance Program and couldn’t be prouder and more excited for L&M’s success! It’s been obvious from talking with Scott Morel & Nicole Salvesen that the student athlete’s at L&M gave 110% during the workouts we’re glad to see it helped pay off! Good Luck in the playoffs Falcons!

The new year means new resolutions for millions of people. The most popular resolution with 38% listing it as their #1 priority – chose ‘LOSING WEIGHT’! A recent poll showed that 38% of the respondents picked ‘losing weight’ as their #1 priority! The problem however is that most of us don’t really have a plan or strategy as to ‘HOW’ to lose the weight . . . and without a plan, we tend to stray from our resolutions by the end of January. Be realistic, start simple, and enlist help if you need it! Here are some simple tips to help all of us eat healthier and making that resolution a reality!

1. 45-60 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week
2. Drink lots of water throughout the day, every hour to avoid dehydration
3. Eat foods low in sugar
4. Go easy on the starches (like potatoes and some pastas)
5.  Eat whole grains
6. Substitute carbs (Example: Substituting brown rice in place of white rice)
7. Try eating clean, lean proteins like eggs, chicken, fish, lean beef and turkey
8.  Eat plenty of vegetables

GOOD LUCK!
